This guide was the product of four years of monitoring the humanitarian conditions in Tigray from 2021 to 2025. It is an attempt to present everything that humanitarian groups were saying about conditions on the ground for the people in Tigray during the siege and occupation.
My own professional background involves community-based peacebuilding in conflict-affected areas. Good peacebuilding begins with a good understanding of the generalizable needs of the population. When people are hungry, when they are sleeping without a roof over their heads, when their children are sick and not growing, sustainable peace is not the priority.
The nexus between humanitarian crisis and war has unfortunately meant that I have had to consume, and try to make sense of, a constant stream of humanitarian data that is messy, sporadic, and often unduly influenced, suppressed, or distorted by the government or other stakeholders, sometimes the aid providers themselves. This is challenging in any environment and Tigray was no different.
This resource guide includes all of the material that I used to monitor the humanitarian situation in Tigray during the war. All of the studies included follow well-defined, if deeply flawed methodologies.
The intention of this guide is to make Tigray more accessible to scholars, and researchers; policymakers; journalists; humanitarians; and human rights advocates. I particularly hope that this guide will make the details of the humanitarian crisis accessible for students.
This guide is also designed to preserve a permanent record of what the people of Tigray were forced to endure. Every report on this list is in the possession of the author.
